option4
option4 is a diverse group of people from around Aotearoa who rallied, in mid-2000, in response to the government’s proposed reforms for saltwater fishing. ‘Soundings’ sought to change the right of every New Zealander to have access to healthy fisheries and fish for free, without a license.
option4’s principles are:
1. A priority right over commercial fishers for free access to a reasonable daily bag limit to be written into legislation.
2. The ability to exclude commercial methods that deplete recreationally important areas.
3. The ability to devise plans to ensure future generations enjoy the same or better quality of rights while preventing fish conserved for recreational use being given to the commercial sector.
4. No licensing of recreational fishers.
option4 continues to work with various fishing and environmental organisations to achieve the common goal of “more fish in the water”. Its website can be found at:
The Association was set up several years ago in response to an ill-conceived Ministry of Fisheries decision to reduce the daily bag limit for snapper from 10 to three, while making no reductions to commercial or customary catch limits. The association lobbies as an advocacy group for Marlborough sea fishers and at the moment is dealing with two other ill-conceived Ministry decisions to ban blue cod fishing in the Marlborough Sounds and ban set netting.
Their website can be found at:

SHOT is a hunting advocacy group. Find out more about them from our News Page.
