 Spotlighting Shooters Slammed

 February 2012

A national hunting group, Sporting Hunters' Outdoor Trust, (SHOT) has slammed shooters who spotlight deer, describing them as lacking hunting sakills and a blight on sporting hunters. Laurie Collins spokesman for SHOT referring to "spotlighter hunters" as newspapers often did was a misnomer.

"They are simply wanton shooters who like the drunken driver among motorists, are a blight on the law abiding majority.

It is illegal by law to shoot from a vehicle or to carry a loaded firearm in one. Similarly shooting from boats in areas like the Marlborough Sounds was not only dangerous and unsporting but illegal too.

Laurie Collins called on fines regarding firearm offences to be updated. Judges should be severe with maximum fines and confiscation of vehicles and boats.

Spotlighting shooters operated late at night and caused stress to farmers and families. At times their indiscriminate shooting resulted in deer wounded and even stock shot.

Laurie Collins called on the Department of Conservation to enforce their law that no shooting be done on public lands during the hours of darkness.

"The department needs to police and forcibly enforce the rules," he said.

Regarding the Turangi death of a woman caused by spotlighters, Laurie Collins said not only the shooter but all of those involved - driver and spot light holder - should be charged with maximum penalties.
