  • A Hunting Life

    Tony Orman
A New Tony Orman Deerstalking Book

This is a book with a big difference. It's not endless tales of countless deer shot, but a book that delves into the deeper meaning and benefits of being among deer, the forest and mountains, in a succession of outdoors and hunting cameos.

  • “The Third Wave - Poisoning the Land”

Conservation Policies Warped Due to 1080

Wairarapa organic winemaker, architect, conservationist and angler Bill Benfield is angry about 1080 and the resulting warping of conservation in New Zealand.

Of his recently published book "The Third Wave - Poisoning the Land" he says if there is any message he has endeavoured to get through, it is that conservation in New Zealand is nothing about saving forests and fauna. "Instead, as the corporate statement of the government's Animal Control Products that distributes 1080 quite clearly states, is about maintaining a roughly $120 million a year government owned poisoning industry."

Book Review

"The Trout Diaries" by Derek Grzelewski

Published by David Bateman Ltd, Price $39.99

Forty seven year old Wanaka-based travel writer Derek Grzelewski was born in Poland but at age 22 escaped the communist regime and came to New Zealand where he discovered New Zealand's rivers and their often-big brown and rainbow trout. Once hooked, he has immersed himself into the intricacies and eternal challenges of fly-fishing. In this beautifully produced book, the author writes not only of trout but the wider and deeper joys such as of just being there going with the river's flow, of fishing friends, of the companionship of dogs and other side lights.

Derek Grzelewski writes with sincerity and a disarming frankness enhanced by elegant style and writing from the heart about a sport he is well and truly hooked on.

Excellent "soft" sketches of flies by well known West Coast artist Johnny Groome plus colour photos make for a delightful book. Experienced fly fishers should delight in it and those contemplating taking on fly fishing, will get an appreciation of the fascination to be found.
